该歌的起源并不明确，有可能于13世纪就写成了。奥克雷（Frederick Oakeley）在1841年将部分歌词从拉丁文翻译成英文，威廉布鲁克（Will¬iam T. Brooke，1848-1917)后来又增加部分歌词的英语译文。约翰•朱利安（John Julian）的《圣诗辞典》（A Dictionary of Hymnology)，认为这首诗有八节。
